    One of the easiest meals for predators are bird houses that are built incorrectly. It is very critical that the bottom of the hole be at least 6 inches from the floor. Predators such as squirrels, jays, and other large birds can easily locate a nest, and even though it may be what seems to be a secure bird house, they can still stick their head part way into the hole. So if you have a house that is only 3-4 inches to the hole from the floor then by the time the nest is created you will have baby birds sitting in their nest at hole level. Not only will they be easy prey they can easily fall out before they are ready to leave the nest.
    I use an oversized non corrosive, weatherproof screw, with finish washer to give a clean look, to open the front panel for clean out. Latches in my opinion are too easily flipped by predators and even the wind. I bore out holes for the screws eliminating splitting and creating limited effort in unscrewing the screw yet keeping a secure fit.
    My bluebird houses are constructed with the most weather resistant and one of the most insulation valued woods, western red cedar. I glue all panels with non toxic, waterproof glue, Then the panels are nailed together with galvanized finish nails.
