1683 & 1685 Mallet Engravings -  Des Vents and Untitled
Allain Mallet whose professional occupation was a military engineer, is known more for his authorship of the five volume "Description de l'Univers', one of the earliest printed miniature, illustrated world history/geography books. It contains numerous decorative maps, views, portraits etc. which are the best source of reasonably priced material for the collector of early illustrated material.
These engravings come from both the first French and the German edition of 'Description de l'Univers'. The first untitled one from 1685 shows a sky filled with comets according to the text description but more likely 'shooting stars' or meteors set above a maritime landscape with gathered onlookers. The second from the first French edition of 1683 is entitled 'winds' and shows a severe thunderstorm in a similar maritime landscape
The engravings each measure 5.5" by 4", have wash hand colouring, and are in good condition.
The engravings are guaranteed to be over 300 years old.
