"
CHIEF WAHOO"
commissioned by Indians owner Bill Veeck in 1947 and created by Walter Goldbach at age 17 while working as a draftsman/artist
at his uncle's J.F. Novak Co. It
was used by the team through the 1951 season, was modernized (red face instead of yellow) and remains virtually unchanged today.
"CHIEF WAHOO"
is most properly decribed as a logo, he is sometimes called a mascot. Tasked with creating a mascot that "would convey a spirit of pure joy and unbridled enthusiam" Walter Goldbach created a smiling Indian face with Yellow skin and a prominent nose.
Sportswriters would eventually take to calling the unnamed character
"CHIEF WAHOO"
Goldbach has said the logo's moniker is inaccurate. "He is not a chief, he is a brave. He has only one feather, chiefs have full headdresses"
Again the card was issued in 1996, perfectly signed in the 90's & stored since then, it's "MINT/GEM MINT"
Mr. Goldbach passed on 12/13/17, he was 88 years old a kind man, and a big part of Indians history.
His original "CHIEF WAHOO" sketches are at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
